Why anything goes on a roof

On a commercial site the ground is usually spoken for — car parking, a loading area, a fire path — and the last thing a tenancy wants is a bank of condensers at head height beside the front door. Up on the roof they are out of the weather that matters, out of reach of anyone leaning on them, and the pipe runs drop straight down into the tenancy.

The two things that go wrong

Water. Every fixing into a metal roof is a hole in the thing keeping the building dry. The units sit on feet that span the ribs and land on the crest, not in the pan, so nothing dams up behind them and no fixing sits where water runs.

Wind. A condenser is a large flat object on an exposed roof. The strapping in this photo is not decoration — it is what stops a unit walking on its mounts in a summer storm, and on a commercial job it is the part a building certifier will ask about.

Getting up there safely

Roof access on a commercial site is its own piece of work: anchor points, a harness, and an access plan agreed with whoever runs the building before anyone climbs a ladder. It is part of the quote, it is part of the day, and it is the reason a rooftop unit is never priced like one on a back deck.
