The job is the setting out

Wiring a pendant cluster takes about ten minutes. Deciding where each one stops takes the rest of the morning, and it is the only part anyone will ever look at.

Drops get set from the floor below, not from the ceiling — because that is where people stand and where the pattern has to read. Too even and it looks like a mistake; too random and it looks like one too. On a stairwell there is a third rule: the lowest pendant has to clear the handrail line and anything anyone might carry up the stairs.

Getting to the ceiling

A two-storey void means a tower or a proper platform, not a ladder off the stair treads. That is part of what a job like this costs and it is on the quote, because the alternative is someone standing on something they shouldn’t be, over a hard floor.

Dimming

Feature pendants almost always want to be dimmable, and glass like this looks best run low. A matched dimmer goes in with them — cheap dimmers and LED lamps are the single most common cause of a beautiful light fitting that buzzes.
