What “outdoor rated” actually means

Every outdoor fitting carries an IP rating — two digits, the first for dust, the second for water. A light under a covered patio can get away with less than one on an exposed wall that takes horizontal rain off the bay, and the difference shows up two summers later when the cheaper one fills with water.

So the fitting gets chosen for where it is actually going, not for the photo on the box. Same for the fixings: stainless or galvanised, because North Brisbane is close enough to salt air that plain steel screws will weep rust down a rendered wall within a year.

Where the light lands

A wall light is there to make a doorway usable, not to floodlight the yard. Mounted a little above head height it puts light on the step and on the lock without shining into the face of whoever is coming up to the door — or through the neighbour’s bedroom window.

The wiring behind it

Outdoor points and lights come off circuits with their own protection, and the cable has to be rated for where it runs. On a render wall that usually means a chase or a neat surface run in conduit, decided before we start rather than improvised on the wall.
